When it comes to beautiful beaches, Long Island without a doubt has bragging rights.  The high dunes, powerful waves, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife contribute to its’ unique appeal.  There are miles and miles of shoreline to choose from whether you prefer the quiet and calm waters that comprise the Long Island Sound or the dramatic surf and charming towns that define the Hamptons and Montauk.  While I enjoyed my weekend jaunts out to the Hamptons as a twenty something year old, my idea of a relaxing beach weekend in my…ahem…older years now includes chasing the kids down at the beach, barbecuing and savoring a good glass of wine listening to the surf on our friends’ deck.  There’s no better place to unwind and get away from the city than Fire Island.  What sets this lovely little oasis apart from the rest of Long Island is that there are no cars allowed on the island….think golf carts and bicycles.  In addition, the only way onto the island is by ferry.  This simple way of life transplants you into another world.  It’s hard to believe this remote and idyllic setting is a mere sixty miles outside of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.  My photos don’t do it justice but here is a glimpse of our latest trip out to Fire Island over the holiday weekend (last year’s photos can be seen here).  I’ve been to my fair share of incredible beaches but this island is a true gem.
