Foods That Will Make Your Skin Glow

While one of my favorite past times is perusing the aisles in Sephora, lately I’m realizing more and more that beauty truly does begin from the inside out.  The expression, “you are what you eat” certainly rings true when it comes to your skin.  So, even though I’m not ready to ditch my beloved maracuja oil and my miracle eye cream, I do believe in infusing the following foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals into my daily diet to give my complexion a healthy glow.

  1. Flax Seeds: These super seeds are a powerhouse of the essential fatty acid, omega-3.  They also help to heal wounds, increase blood circulation, act as an anti-inflammatory and soften skin.  I sprinkle mine over oatmeal, yogurt, infuse them into pancakes and most things I bake, and add them to smoothies and salad dressing.
  2. Dark Leafy Greens: These are ideal sources of vitamins B, C and E, potassium, calcium, iron and omega-3 fatty acids.  Additionally, they’re loaded with phytonutrients such as beta-carotene and lutein.  I eat salads most days either for lunch in a flax wrap with fresh turkey or for dinner topped with grilled chicken.  When I’m on the go, I love this blueberry-kale smoothie.
  3. Sweet Potatoes: These are a main source of carotenoids as well as Vitamin C which helps to boost skin.  Lately, I’ve been roasting them in the oven for twenty minutes with a dash of salt and olive oil.  Then, I toss them over a salad and sprinkle a little feta cheese on top…seriously sooo good!
  4. Avocados: I would eat avocados all day every day if I could.  They are rich in omega-3 which leaves your skin baby-soft and smooth.  Plus, they’re loaded with antioxidants which help eliminate wrinkles.  I mash up a half avocado with fresh lemon juice and spread it over whole wheat toast (you can also top it with tomatoes) for a healthy and easy breakfast.  I also love them sliced over a salad or added to a burger in lieu of cheese.
  5. Carrots: Carrots are high in Vitamins C and A which aid in collagen and prevent wrinkles while evening out the skin.  I love mine roasted, shaved over a salad, juiced with apples and fresh mint or in the form of this soup.
  6. Green Tea:  Green Tea acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant which reduces redness, fights acne and gives skin a youthful appearance.  After my first two cups of coffee in the morning, I switch over to green tea.  During the warmer months, I make a huge pitcher of iced green tea or when I’m feeling under the weather, I add raw honey and lemon.
