Pear, Blueberry Fruit Crumble
Lately, I’ve been trying to gradually decrease the amount of processed foods our family consumes so I was excited to discover this recipe a few months ago. I kept meaning to try it but would constantly find myself without all the necessary ingredients. Then, the other day, after realizing I desperately needed to restock the cabinets as I simultaneously waited for the school bus to arrive, I decided to improvise with the items I did have on hand and take a chance. I swapped out nectarines for pears, almond meal for almond flour, maple syrup for agave nectar, quinoa flakes for oatmeal and skipped the sage. I admit, I was dubious as to how this concoction was going to turn out. I mean, no butter or sugar in a crumble? Plus, I substituted so many elements, I thought for sure this was going to be a culinary let down. About ten minutes after I popped it into the oven, the smell of cinnamon was wafting through the house and once I removed it to see the crusty top and the bubbling fruit, I knew I had a baking success on my hands. Of course, what really matters are my four food critics. The silence spoke for itself. And then they asked for seconds…need I say more?

Good thing you left out the sage leaves, I have the cookbook and that recipe is wrong! It should be 1/2 c almond meal, not sage 😉 I like the idea of subbing oat for quinoa flakes!
