Today, I’d like to introduce you to Lauren Craig, the creator and author behind Perpetually Chic.  I’ve been reading Lauren’s blog for over a year now and it has quickly become my go-to source for healthy and seasonal recipes, easy and effortless fashion choices, and natural yet effective beauty products.  Lauren’s graceful writing style, crisp photos and her chic and simple approach have me tuning into Perpetually Chic every day.  I had a few questions for Lauren which she so graciously took the time to answer.  I really enjoyed reading her replies and getting to know her better as I’m sure you will too. So, without further adieu…

1. What was the inspiration behind Perpetually Chic and how did you arrive at that name?

Friends were always asking me questions—about the shoes I was wearing, about a recipe I had made, where we stayed on a trip. It took me a while to realize they were asking these things because they liked my style. So when I decided to start a blog as a creative outlet a few years ago, I thought I’d just share everything I was into in case there were others out there also interested. Turns out there were!

The name came from the idea that style isn’t just about what we wear—it’s about the things we do, the places we go, the lifestyle we lead. Personal style is infused into everything you do, carrying through in the bits and pieces of your daily life. So from the beginning it has been about a full lifestyle.

 2. Take us through a typical day balancing blogging and being a mom.

I’m actually in a transition phase, since I recently quit my full-time job as the social media manager for American Girl. I had a growing itch to do something different than my 8-5 and going back to work after becoming a new mom confirmed that direction for me. Fortunately I had the opportunity to make such a big change and left to take on consulting work, refocus on blogging, and tackle a brand-new challenge—an exciting start-up for moms. I still want a fulfilling career, but I also want the flexibility to define my own schedule so I can get more time with my daughter. This change has meant slower mornings and evenings that aren’t rushed and are 100% focused on Elsie. Every morning starts with playing in her room for an hour; it’s my favorite time of day. Once she’s at school, I get my work done. On nice days, I may pick her up early. I’m really cherishing the gift of slowing down and redefining my professional path.

3. How would you describe your personal style?

Simple yet refined, comfortable yet chic, stylish yet practical. A balance of opposites!

4What are three beauty products you could not live without?

This one’s easy since I’ve recently reset my beauty routine to just a handful of natural products: Tata Harper Repairative Moisturizer, RMS “Un” Cover-Up, and Vapour Beauty’s multi-use blush. I like products that take minimal effort but make me feel put together.

 5. Where are your favorite places to shop?  Any new and unique sites you can share?

The usual suspects—J.Crew, Madewell, LOFT—are just easy go-tos. Shopbop is based here in Madison, so I order online and things often arrive the next day. For new, I’m really into what I’ve seen from Cuyana, Everlane, and Apiece Apart. Their simple aesthetic and classic sensibility fits my style, so I can’t wait to give some of their pieces a try!

 6. Describe the ideal summer meal…plus dessert.

The ideal summer meal is sitting outside with a Cedar-Planked Salmon Niçoise, some crusty French bread, and a glass of rosé. I don’t cook a lot of dessert, but I do love a rustic fruit galette.

7. Any travel plans on the horizon?  What would be your idea of the perfect summer getaway?

The perfect summer getaway is anywhere on water. We’re taking a weekend road trip up to Door County, Wisconsin soon. It’s a beautiful area on Lake Michigan, and we rented a little place and can’t wait to explore the small towns along the peninsula. Then in September we’re headed to Mexico, where I’m speaking at She Takes Flight, a leadership & empowerment retreat for women. We visited the area on our babymoon last year, so I can’t wait to return to soak up some beach time and eat good food!

8. What direction do you see Perpetually Chic going in over the next few months?

I know many women think that good style takes a lot of effort, and they overthink it (been there, done that!). I love seeing gorgeous parties, elegant desserts, and runway-worthy outfits as much as anyone, but those things aren’t realistic for my daily life. So I want to show an unfussy, approachable lifestyle that speaks to modern women and shows them how to keep it simple and incorporate style into every day.

9. What has been the most rewarding aspect of blogging?

The feeling that I’m helping or inspiring other women in some small way. It still surprises me that people are interested in my life and style. Every time a reader or friend says they tried a recipe I made or emails me for tips on stylish diaper bags, it makes my day!

10. What advice do you have for aspiring bloggers?

Be yourself and give it time. Let things happen organically. Don’t be afraid to just get started and recognize that you’re going to learn and evolve as you go; it’s the only way!
