This past Saturday night, I headed into the city to enjoy a long overdue evening out with my bff from college. I should preface by saying that she is one of those rare friends that although we are very different in terms of our style, our personalities and what directions we have taken in life, we just have a certain rapport that sets her apart. To me, she’s like the older sister I never had. So, naturally, the afternoon began with Rose and a cheese platter and lots of catching up. We headed downtown for dinner to a charming little Cuban restaurant in the West Village (I highly recommend sitting out back in the garden area and ordering the croqetas) and then we strolled over to the famed Minetta Tavern for after dinner drinks. Let’s just say, by the time we left, we were feeling no pain so we cabbed it back uptown and upon exiting the car, I had an unpleasant run in with a not so cute rodent on the sidewalk. I have an irrational fear of any and all rodents but particularly ones with sharp teeth and leathery tails. (I’m shuddering as I type this.) My reaction was to flee the scene and take off down the sidewalk until all signs of that creepy little critter were gone. According to my friend, he wobbled over to hide under a parked car, probably traumatized by my incessant screaming. Being the good friend that she is, she promptly took me by my trembling hand and led me up the steps to her building. As we entered the vestibule, we were greeted by a homeless woman who was seeking shelter in the lobby. We squealed yet again taken aback by her presence. It was sad and unsettling to see this woman so desperate for a place to rest. We headed up to my friend’s apartment in a state of shock as we digested the last few moments…talk about a sobering experience! Although the following morning (or should I say afternoon), we shared a good laugh over our hair raising incident, I was glad to put on my mom hat once again and head back to the burbs. As much I love a little excitement, I prefer the freedom to take a walk without worrying about a furry friend nipping at my heels!
