My fondness for gimlets began a few years ago when my husband and I were first introduced to Mad Men.  I was instantly intrigued by this portrayal of New York during the 1960’s…the cigarettes, the elegant nightlife, the fashions, particularly during the early 60’s which were reflective of Jackie Kennedy with those pillbox hats, boxy jackets with oversized buttons, the full skirted evening gowns with close fitting waists and pointed toe heels.  Everyone seemed so polished and glamorous, even Betty Draper tucked away in the suburbs in her slim fitting capri pants and cardigans.  And then there were the drinks…an Old Fashioned, a Grasshopper, and of course a vodka Gimlet.  Betty liked her Gimlets so naturally I was curious.  I ordered one while we were out to dinner one night with friends and ever since, this has been my go to cocktail.  There are various ways to make a Gimlet and some even prefer it with gin.  However, I like mine made with the simplest ingredients.  No Rose’s lime juice here…way too sweet for my palette.  I like mine solely with fresh lime juice and vodka.  That’s it.  For two servings, juice two or three limes, pour into a cocktail shaker with ice and fill the remaining half with vodka, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with lime wedges.  I usually stop at one….two will knock you off your feet.  Sip slowly and savor.  Isn’t that what Betty Draper would do?
